The public-private diidve will never be broken down until the public sector and private sector have the same pensions provisions available to them .Only when everyone is in the same boat will there be any chance for decent pensions for all .All pensions should be fully funded and the recipient should bear the majority of the risk of shortfall , not someone else . I just don't see how that is possible with any defined benefits system .What is being put forward by John Hutton is a stop gap .

Hi Cameron,
It's not about downgrading public sector pensions , we should be upgrading private pensions. We don't want any pensions in private or public to be below a standard that people can live on in their retirement . It's a huge issue .The private sector should not begrudge the public sector and vice a versa. We should make pensions fair for all.
Thanks for your comment

OK – the average is £7,800 – in the private sector you would need to build up a pension pot/purchase an annuity of £160,000 (approx – assuming a 5 per cent return) to get such a pension. So the charge that these are gold-plated isn’t entirely that unfair. How many private sector workers can afford to save up £160k in a pension?
